Introduction

My name is Dick Hildreth.

I am currently a computer professional, fascinated with software development using “standard” (not proprietary) tools and languages, as well as implementing Open Source software. I also have experience in computer networking and several server environments.

I have developed a love of football (called soccer in this country, because “football” seems to have been reserved for a game in which the foot is only put to the ball when nobody can think of anything better to do).

I am also a political junkie, an affliction that keeps me glued to my computer at times when I should probably be doing other things.

 

Consulting

I provide services at reasonable prices for small businesses, home offices and home users. Among the services I can provide are:

On-site services are available primarily around Madison but also in the Chicagoland area which I can support remotely. Web and custom software development is available remotely. Some troubleshooting for Windows workstations and servers can be provided remotely with appropriate arrangements and utility installations.

 

Youth Soccer

Growing up in Florida, I thought every season was baseball season. Then one year, I attended a private school. We had an English teacher from the Isle of Man who taught us rugby (I was a scrum half) and soccer (I was a goalkeeper). While I enjoyed rugby, I absolutely fell in love with soccer. I returned to public school and there was no soccer program in the high school. I played varsity baseball and joined a soccer club run by an Englishman in town.

After graduating from college, I ended up becoming a soccer referee for high school and adult and youth recreational leagues. I also returned to playing, mostly as keeper, but also in defense and midfield. Today, while I still referee and coach occasionally, my playing days are behind me.

As I was searching for information about area leagues, clubs, rules, etc., I found that it was very difficult to locate information about youth soccer. Of course, I set about putting together my own compendium of information, providing something of a directory to the various resources that I was able to track down. The results of my efforts became Youth Soccer Resource.

 

Politics

I am a liberal. Despite the 40+ years of the Right trying to demonize the term, I wear the label with pride. Call me a “progressive” if your sensibilities demand it. I will proudly answer to either appellation.

I believe there is a commons that belongs to us all, and that no corporate entity has any claim to it. The corporatization of our nation and of the world must be halted and reversed. The corporation has no inherent rights, but is merely a creation of a government of the people, and it must be brought to heel in order to save democracy itself.

The preamble to the Constitution reads:

“We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”
(emphasis added). Note that there is no caveat such as “unless a corporation can make a reasonable profit otherwise”. We the people must assure that the general welfare is being promoted!

I am very much saddened by the fact that the Democratic Leadership Council (DLC) has hijacked the Democratic Party. While I still try to align myself with Democrats, it is very discouraging to recognize that the DLC-controlled Democratic Party is ideologically to the Right of Richard Nixon! I spend what time and effort I can afford, nearly in a state of denial, supporting the local Democratic Party, as well as writing Letters to the Editor and writing e-mails and making phone calls to my Congressman, my Senators and my State Legislators.
